Do Not Carry Fire and Expect No Burn

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

Proverbs 6:27-28 KJV

We can recognize temptation and still bargain for a little more time beside it. A conversation feels flattering, a screen offers secrecy, or an old attachment begins asking for attention. We tell ourselves that nothing serious has happened yet.

Proverbs removes the comforting illusion that danger becomes harmless when managed confidently. Fire retains its nature. Sexual temptation should be treated with decisive caution rather than entertained as proof of personal strength.

Step away early. End inappropriate contact, remove access that feeds the pattern, and seek trustworthy accountability. If you have deceived your spouse, obtain wise help for truthful disclosure and responsible repair.

Do not use this passage to create suspicious control over every ordinary interaction. Its first application is to your own choices and willingness to obey God. A faithful marriage needs both trust and integrity. Christ's grace gives strength for a real refusal, not permission to keep testing the boundary. Protect what is precious by leaving the danger rather than repeatedly explaining why this particular flame will be different from the others.

Keep the passage in context

In a warning against adultery, the father uses fire and hot coals to expose the foolishness of expecting sin without consequences. The illustration urges avoidance of the danger itself.
