Guard What Belongs to the Marriage

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Hebrews 13:4 KJV

Faithfulness is protected before a dramatic temptation arrives. The private message, the hidden conversation, and the relationship that becomes emotionally secret can establish a direction long before anyone names it a serious problem.

Be truthful about boundaries. Avoid cultivating an intimacy outside marriage that depends upon your spouse remaining unaware. Appropriate friendships can be handled openly and respectfully without borrowing the place of the covenant relationship.

If a boundary has been crossed, bring the matter into the light and seek qualified help. Do not minimize the injury because the conduct stopped short of some further act. Trust requires an honest account of what actually happened.

God honors marriage, and His warning about sexual sin is serious. Christ also provides forgiveness for sinners who turn to Him. Grace calls us into truthful change rather than secrecy. Protect the relationship through clear choices made early, when it is still possible to decline the next message or step away from an unhealthy pattern. Faithfulness has an ordinary daily form, and those ordinary decisions help guard something the Lord has told us to honor.
