Do Not Make Obedience Harder for Each Other

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

Romans 14:13 KJV

Love notices where another person struggles. It does not keep placing the same pressure before them simply to prove that the activity is harmless for everyone else.

Listen when your spouse explains a concern of conscience or a source of temptation. Consider a reasonable adjustment that makes faithful living easier. That may involve a form of entertainment, a spending habit, or a social setting that requires clearer boundaries.

Both people need honesty. A preference should not be disguised as spiritual danger to control the household. A real struggle should not be mocked because the other spouse does not share it. Scripture and wise counsel can help distinguish the matters carefully.

Paul directs attention toward building up rather than winning a dispute about liberty. Christ has cared for His people at great cost, and believers can accept modest inconvenience for another person's good. A marriage grows stronger when each spouse is interested in helping the other obey the Lord. Use your freedom thoughtfully, and let love make room for the practical care another person's faithfulness may need.

Keep the passage in context

In a discussion of conscience and Christian liberty, Paul calls believers to avoid placing a stumblingblock in another's way. Love considers the spiritual effect of one's choices.
