A Shared Purpose Larger than Winning

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:5-6 KJV

A disagreement can become a contest with only two possible results: one spouse wins and the other gives in. That approach makes even a useful decision feel costly to the relationship.

Return to the purpose you share. The household needs a responsible plan, the child needs consistent care, or the family needs a truthful response. State that common responsibility before defending a preferred method.

Agreement does not require pretending differences are unimportant. Listen carefully, compare the options with Scripture and the actual facts, and seek wise help where needed. The goal should be a sound decision both people can carry responsibly.

Paul's vision of unity looks toward God's glory. A Christian marriage can keep that higher purpose in view through ordinary choices. Christ deserves conduct marked by humility and love while the details are being settled. You may need to yield a preference or revise an assumption. That is not a defeat when the shared result is wiser and more faithful. Let the success of the conversation be measured by truth and care rather than by which person managed to keep the original plan unchanged.

Keep the passage in context

Paul desires believers to be likeminded according to Christ so that together they glorify God. Unity serves His honor rather than the victory of one personality.
