Faithfulness through a Small Change of Direction

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

Proverbs 16:9 KJV

A changed plan can feel larger than the change itself. A move is delayed, an opportunity closes, or a responsibility arrives earlier than expected. The disappointment may carry fear about everything the original plan seemed to promise.

Tell the truth about that disappointment. Trust in God does not require pretending you never wanted the other outcome. It does require resisting the conclusion that His care has ended because the route is different.

Look together at the next available responsibility. Gather facts, discuss options, and make a wise adjustment. Do not invent a detailed explanation of God's purpose when Scripture has not supplied one.

The Lord's direction is wiser than our ability to forecast. He can be trusted while we work with incomplete information. A couple may need time to grieve a lost expectation and still take the next faithful step. Give each other that room. The path ahead may be unfamiliar, but honesty, patience, prayerful dependence, and obedience remain available. A small change of direction does not remove the good work of loving one another well on the road you actually have.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb places human planning under the LORD's direction. A person may devise a way while remaining dependent upon God's government of the steps.
