Commit the Work before Demanding the Result

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

Proverbs 16:3 KJV

We sometimes ask the Lord to bless a result we have already decided must happen. Our work, motives, and methods receive less attention than the outcome we hope to secure.

Committing the work to Him includes willingness to have it examined by His Word. A plan that depends upon dishonesty, neglect, or pride should be changed rather than protected with religious language.

As a couple, discuss the purpose of a major commitment. Consider the effect on your responsibilities and the people who depend upon you. Seek wise counsel where needed, and remain willing to take a less impressive path if it is the more faithful one.

This proverb is not a promise that every project labeled Christian will succeed as planned. It calls us to place our labor under the Lord's care and authority. Work diligently, receive correction, and trust Him with what follows. A shared undertaking becomes healthier when both spouses can value faithfulness above the need to prove that the original idea was brilliant. Commit the actual work, including its motives and methods, rather than asking God only to guarantee the final number.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb calls for committing one's works to the LORD. Trustful dependence should govern both the labor undertaken and the purposes behind it.
