Give the Word Time to Remain

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Psalm 1:2 KJV

A passage can be read quickly and forgotten before breakfast is finished. The eyes reached the last line, but the truth never received enough attention to become part of the day.

Slow down with a manageable portion. Notice one clear truth about God, one command, or one promise in its proper context. Return to it during an ordinary task instead of immediately replacing it with more noise.

As a couple, share something you are learning without turning every conversation into a lesson for the other person. The first application may belong to your own attitude. A simple, sincere exchange can encourage both of you to keep thinking about Scripture.

Meditation is thoughtful attention to God's revealed Word. It does not mean emptying the mind or inventing a message beyond the text. Let the passage retain its meaning and reach your conduct. A few verses received carefully can influence the tone of an evening, the honesty of a decision, or the patience shown in a small inconvenience. Give the Word time to remain with you after the reading itself is complete.

Keep the passage in context

The blessed person delights in the law of the LORD and meditates in it. Attention to God's Word shapes the direction of life beyond the moment of reading.
