Grace Meets a Humble Heart

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

James 4:6 KJV

Pride makes ordinary correction feel like a threat. A spouse mentions something that needs attention, and suddenly the conversation concerns your reputation, your intentions, and every good thing you have done lately.

Humility allows a simpler response. You can hear the concern, admit what is true, and take responsibility without defending your whole life. God's grace is given to real need, not to a carefully maintained appearance of needing none.

That does not mean accepting false accusations or allowing contempt. Truth should govern both the concern and the answer. A humble person can speak firmly while remaining willing to learn.

Begin with the part that is clear. Correct the mistake, apologize for the unkindness, or seek help with the habit. Christ has already exposed the depth of our need through the cross and shown the abundance of His grace. There is no benefit in pretending before Him or your spouse that you are beyond correction. A humble heart gives grace room to shape the next response, and that response can make home a more honest place for both people.

Keep the passage in context

James contrasts God's resistance to pride with the grace He gives to the humble. The surrounding passage calls for submission to God and honest repentance.
