Hear the Rest of the Sentence

Familiarity can make us careless listeners. After years together, we begin finishing each other's sentences, including the ones we have misunderstood. A spouse starts describing a difficult day, and we offer a solution before hearing the trouble.

Proverbs calls an answer given before hearing folly and shame. I cannot claim to understand someone simply because I recognize the first few words. Marriage gives me more reason to listen carefully, not less.

Sometimes the most loving response is to put down the phone and let the story reach its end. Ask for a detail you missed. Repeat the concern in your own words before defending yourself or proposing a fix. Listening does not settle every disagreement, but it keeps you from arguing with a meaning your spouse never intended.

Give one conversation your undivided attention today. Let the answer wait until the hearing is finished. A person who feels heard may still disagree with you, but you will be speaking to the real concern instead of the one you assumed.
