Keep Courtesy after the Guests Leave

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

Romans 12:10 KJV

Some homes become quiet in an uncomfortable way as soon as the guests leave. The warmth used for company disappears, and the remaining conversation concerns only what went wrong or what still needs cleaning.

Your spouse should receive the courtesy offered to a visitor. Say thank you for the preparation. Help restore the room. Speak about difficulties without making the evening a review of the other person's failures.

Honor is often expressed through small choices. Let your spouse finish a story, avoid correcting an unimportant detail before an audience, and give fair credit for shared work. Respectful conduct matters even when no one outside the marriage can see it.

The Lord calls His people to sincere affection. That sincerity reaches the moment when public hospitality becomes private housekeeping again. You can enjoy serving guests together while still tending the relationship that made the welcome possible. A warm home should remain warm for the people who live there. Let the last conversation of the evening carry some of the same thoughtfulness you were willing to offer across the table an hour earlier.

Keep the passage in context

Paul calls believers to brotherly affection and to prefer one another in honor. Respectful care should characterize the whole Christian life.
