Different Abilities under the Same Lord
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 KJV
One spouse may be comfortable with people while the other handles practical details well. One notices a discouraged face; the other notices that the door will not close properly. Both kinds of attention can be useful.
Avoid measuring your spouse's service by your own abilities. A person does not have to work in your preferred way to contribute faithfully. Learn what each of you can reasonably offer and how those abilities can support a shared purpose.
The passage concerns the body of Christ, where varied gifts serve under one Lord. Marriage gives a nearby opportunity to practice appreciation for differences without turning them into competition.
Develop your abilities with humility and remain willing to do ordinary work that carries no special distinction. A useful couple is not one in which both people perform the same role perfectly. It is one in which each person serves faithfully, respects the other, and keeps Christ central. The task may need a welcoming conversation and a repaired chair. Gratitude for both can make service more joyful and less crowded by the desire to be the more noticeable half of the team.
Keep the passage in context
Paul describes varieties of gifts, administrations, and operations under the same Spirit, Lord, and God. Diversity within the body serves a shared divine purpose.
