Kindness in Familiar Words

We often prepare our words more carefully for a stranger than for the person who shares our home. Familiarity becomes an excuse to speak without care. The person closest to us receives what we would never consider saying elsewhere.

Proverbs 31 describes wisdom and kindness together in a woman's speech. Kindness is not empty sweetness, and wisdom is not cold correction. Truth can be spoken with a purpose that seeks another person's good.

Do not use this chapter as a measuring stick to shame your wife or to demand an impossible performance. Let the verse first examine the atmosphere your own words create. Both spouses need speech that is truthful, considerate, and willing to build up.

Change one familiar phrase that has become needlessly sharp. Give a clear request instead of a sarcastic hint. Express thanks instead of treating every act of care as expected. A home is shaped by repeated words, and repeated kindness can become one of its dependable sounds.
