Learning Gentleness Together
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30 KJV
A weary spouse does not always need a quick solution. Sometimes the first need is a place to speak without being corrected after every sentence. We can be so ready to fix the schedule that we miss the person carrying it.
Jesus invites the weary to come to Him. He describes Himself as meek and lowly in heart. His authority is never cruel, and His care is never careless. Husbands and wives have much to learn from the way He receives burdened people.
Make room to understand the load your spouse is carrying. Some duties can be shared, some expectations can be changed, and some burdens need help beyond the two of you. Neither spouse can take Christ's place in the other's heart. We can, however, point each other toward Him while offering practical care. A gentle answer and a willing pair of hands can make home a place where tired people receive kindness instead of another demand to perform.
Keep the passage in context
Jesus invites burdened people to come to Him and learn from Him. His rest does not remove His lordship; His invitation includes taking His yoke and learning His meekness.
