Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

When a house is finished, visitors notice the paint and the furniture. The foundation rarely receives a compliment. Yet everything visible depends on work that most people will never see.
Jesus compares obedience to building on rock. A marriage needs that kind of foundation. Agreeing that Scripture is good does not take the place of following it. Truthfulness in money matters, faithfulness to our vows, and kindness in private conversations give daily shape to what we believe.
Storms come to both houses in Jesus' illustration. A Christian couple may face grief, illness, or financial loss. Those troubles do not prove that obedience has failed. They reveal how much we need the Lord's words under our feet. Attend to the hidden work before demanding a more attractive surface. A sincere apology, an honest account, and a kept promise may look small today. Repeated over time, they strengthen the life you are building together under Christ's authority.
Keep the passage in context
Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount by contrasting hearing and obeying His sayings with hearing and disregarding them. Both houses face a storm; the foundation makes the difference.
