Make Room for an Unfinished Explanation

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.

Proverbs 18:2 KJV

Sometimes a spouse needs a little time to explain a concern. The first sentence is incomplete, the example is clumsy, and the real burden appears only after patient listening. Interrupting too quickly can close the door before the matter is understood.

Let the explanation develop. You do not have to agree with every interpretation in order to listen well. Understanding what your spouse means gives you a better starting point for an honest response.

Watch the desire to insert your own experience immediately. A similar story may be useful later, but it can also move attention away from the person who is trying to speak. Offer the courtesy of remaining with their concern for a while.

There will be time to clarify facts, correct a misunderstanding, and make decisions. Begin by hearing accurately. The Lord has given us many opportunities to practice patience close to home. Few are more ordinary than allowing another person to finish a thought without having to compete for the floor. A marriage becomes easier to speak within when understanding is valued as much as having something to say.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb describes the fool's preference for expressing his own heart over gaining understanding. Wisdom is willing to learn rather than only announce a position.
