Make Your Help Useful to the Person Receiving It
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
Romans 15:2 KJV
We can enjoy being helpful while overlooking what the other person actually needs. A large meal may burden someone with limited storage. An unannounced visit may interrupt needed rest. Good intentions still need careful attention.
As a couple, ask how your service can be useful. Offer a clear option and allow an honest refusal. Respecting a person's circumstances is part of caring for them.
The same principle belongs inside marriage. A surprise intended to please your spouse may be less helpful than completing the task they have already explained is pressing. Listen to the need before selecting the gesture.
Paul connects consideration with another person's good. That gives us a better goal than being known as generous people. Sometimes useful love is quiet, flexible, and willing to change the plan. Christ has shown us care that reaches our real need, not a need invented for the convenience of the giver. Let His example help you serve with attention. The most thoughtful gift may be the one shaped by what the receiver has actually said rather than by the story you hoped to tell afterward.
Keep the passage in context
Paul calls believers to please their neighbors for their good and edification. Christian consideration aims at genuine benefit rather than simply avoiding disagreement.
