Peace at the Kitchen Table

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Matthew 5:9 KJV

An argument can stay in a house long after the voices have settled down. We carry it into supper, answer with a short word, and wait for the other person to make the first move. A quiet room is not always a peaceful room.

Jesus calls peacemakers blessed. In marriage, that often starts with an honest sentence about our own conduct. Name the harsh answer without attaching a list of your spouse's mistakes. Listen long enough to understand the hurt. A conversation about one problem should not become a trial about every year you have been married.

Peace also needs truth. Serious harm should be brought into the light, with trustworthy help and protection where needed. This verse does not tell a husband or wife to hide abuse. It calls us away from enjoying conflict and toward doing what is right. Clear words, patient listening, and a willingness to change give peace a place to grow at an ordinary kitchen table.

Keep the passage in context

Jesus describes the character of those who belong to His kingdom. Making peace does not earn adoption into God's family, and peace never requires calling evil good.
