Receive Correction for the Fruit It Can Bear

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Hebrews 12:11 KJV

Correction rarely feels pleasant in the moment. It interrupts our preferred account of ourselves and asks for a change we may not have planned to make. The discomfort can tempt us to reject the truth before considering its value.

Hebrews speaks about God's fatherly discipline. It should not be used to authorize one spouse to control or punish the other. Both husband and wife remain people accountable to the Lord, deserving dignity and safety.

When a truthful concern is raised, consider the fruit that receiving it could bear. A more dependable habit, a gentler response, or an honest correction may benefit the whole home. Admit what is right even if the conversation was imperfect.

If the manner was harmful, address that separately and seek help where needed. The goal is neither silent submission to mistreatment nor refusal of all correction. It is growth in righteousness under God's care. Christ's grace enables us to learn without making humiliation our identity. A difficult truth received honestly can become the beginning of a better pattern that both spouses will eventually be grateful to have learned.
