Remember the Whole Journey Truthfully
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins. Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.
Psalm 66:10-12 KJV
When a painful season ends, people may expect a simple account of how everything worked out. Real memory is often more complicated. There can be gratitude for help received alongside sorrow over what was lost.
Psalm 66 names both the testing and the deliverance. The hard part does not disappear from the praise. A truthful account of God's care can include circumstances that were frightening, costly, and difficult to understand.
Allow your spouse to remember differently without turning memory into a disagreement over who has been more thankful. One person may speak first about the relief; another may still need to describe the hurt. Both may be telling part of the truth.
Avoid making this passage a guarantee that every trial will end in visible earthly abundance. God remains faithful even when the final resolution belongs beyond this life. Where deliverance has come, receive it with gratitude. Where wounds remain, tend them with patience. A marriage can honor the Lord through a truthful remembrance of the whole journey, including the days when trust was being exercised with very little strength to spare.
Keep the passage in context
The psalm remembers severe testing and God's eventual deliverance. Its praise includes an honest account of hardship rather than erasing the difficult part of the story.
