Love through Changing Abilities

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

Psalm 73:26 KJV

Illness or aging can change the familiar balance of a marriage. One person begins doing tasks the other once handled, and both may feel the loss of an earlier independence. Love now requires learning a different daily shape.

Speak about those changes with dignity. Include the person receiving care in decisions wherever possible. Help should preserve appropriate choice and respect rather than reduce a spouse to a list of needs.

The caregiver also has limits. Accept assistance, take needed rest, and seek reliable information. Exhaustion does not become more spiritual when it is hidden.

Asaph's confidence reaches beyond bodily strength. The Lord remains his portion when physical resources fail. That truth does not remove grief over changing abilities, but it gives the marriage a deeper measure of worth. The person you love remains valuable when productivity decreases. Christ's care for His people is not paid according to output. Let that grace shape the patience, practical planning, and tenderness needed for the life you are sharing now.

Keep the passage in context

Asaph confesses that God remains the strength of his heart and his portion when flesh and heart fail. His lasting treasure is the Lord Himself.
