Speak Faithfully to the Generation Coming Behind

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.

Psalm 71:18 KJV

Experience can become either a resource for others or a collection of complaints about how things have changed. The difference often lies in what we choose to emphasize when someone younger is listening.

Tell the truth about the Lord's faithfulness. Explain what Scripture has taught you, including where you had to be corrected. Younger people need a clear gospel and a credible account of grace, not the impression that an earlier generation never struggled.

As a couple, welcome appropriate opportunities to encourage. Listen to present concerns without dismissing them simply because the circumstances differ from yours. Wisdom becomes more useful when it understands the person receiving it.

The psalmist wants to declare God's strength. Keep that purpose larger than the desire to have your own experience admired. Christ deserves the attention of every generation. Your part may be a patient conversation, a faithful example, or a truthful account of how His Word steadied your home. Use the years and opportunities He gives with gratitude, and let those coming behind hear more about His sufficiency than about how difficult they are to understand.

Keep the passage in context

The psalmist desires God's sustaining presence in later years so that he may declare His strength to another generation. Continued life is connected with faithful testimony.
