Tenderness around a Broken Heart
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalm 34:18 KJV
A broken heart does not always announce itself clearly. It may appear as unusual quietness, tears over a small reminder, or difficulty facing a task that once seemed simple. A spouse who knows the person well may still not understand the whole weight.
Be tender with what you cannot fully measure. Avoid demanding a schedule for improvement or treating sadness as a failure to appreciate the good that remains. Hope and sorrow can be present in the same faithful person.
The Lord knows the heart completely. His nearness gives us reason to come honestly rather than hide pain behind a religious expression. He is not embarrassed by the need we struggle to explain.
Offer practical care and encourage appropriate support when needed. A loss may require time, wise companionship, and professional help as well as pastoral encouragement. Your spouse does not need you to pretend you understand everything. They may need to know that you will keep listening without making their sorrow a problem they must quickly solve for your comfort. Let the Lord's compassion shape the space you give to a heart that is still hurting.
Keep the passage in context
David speaks of the LORD's nearness to the brokenhearted and His care for the contrite. The psalm encourages trust without promising a life free of affliction.
