The Kindness That Is Still Owed

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

There is satisfaction in marking a bill paid. We like to know that a responsibility is finished. Love in marriage does not work like an account that can be settled once and closed.
Paul describes love as a continuing debt toward others. Yesterday's kindness matters, but it does not remove today's opportunity. A thoughtful anniversary gift does not excuse weeks of careless speech. Years of hard work do not make listening unnecessary now.
This does not mean either spouse has endless strength. Love respects human limits and shares work honestly. It does mean that we should stop using old acts of service to defend present neglect. Notice what care is needed in the season you are living through. A sick spouse may need practical help. A discouraged spouse may need patient attention. A good marriage keeps learning how to give love in today's circumstances instead of expecting yesterday's effort to carry every day that follows.
Keep the passage in context
Paul has instructed believers to fulfill their obligations. He then describes love as an ongoing duty toward others, not as permission to disregard financial responsibilities.
