Doing Our Part without Controlling the Outcome

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Romans 12:18 KJV

We can prepare a careful sentence and still receive a sharp answer. That is discouraging, especially when we hoped one conversation would settle a long-standing problem. Romans reminds us that responsibility and control are different things.

We are to pursue peace as much as it lies in us. We can choose honest words, a suitable time, and a respectful tone. We can apologize for our own sin. We cannot force another person's repentance or make trust appear on command.

Marriage calls for patient effort, but patient effort is not the same as accepting dangerous conduct. Serious harm needs protection and trustworthy help. In ordinary conflict, attend to your part without trying to manage every feeling your spouse has. Keep promises made during the conversation. Give change time to be demonstrated. Peace is helped by two people taking responsibility, and the next faithful step is often the responsibility already within your own reach.

Keep the passage in context

Paul calls believers to pursue peace as far as their own conduct allows. The wording recognizes that one person cannot control every response or guarantee reconciliation.
