The Second Answer Can Be Better

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

Proverbs 15:28 KJV

A husband or wife can hear a complaint and begin preparing a defense before the whole matter is understood. The first answer then protects pride instead of addressing the need. A few moments of thought can change the direction of the conversation.

The righteous heart studies to answer. That does not require a rehearsed speech. It means giving truth and love enough room to govern the response. Your spouse deserves more than the first sentence anger supplies.

If your initial reply was unfair, replace it plainly. Acknowledge the sharpness, return to the actual concern, and answer with care. Do not insist that the conversation continue under the damage of words you already know were wrong.

This habit becomes easier when it is practiced in small matters. A schedule change, a forgotten item, or a difference of preference offers room to learn. Christ has shown us patience we did not earn. Let His grace make you more willing to pause, listen, and speak honestly. A thoughtful second answer cannot erase every consequence of the first, but it can begin the repair and establish a better direction for what follows.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb contrasts the righteous person's thoughtful answer with the careless outpouring of evil speech. Taking time to answer can be an act of wisdom.
