The Work Someone Will Miss
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.
Acts 9:36 KJV
Tabitha's service had taken a form people could hold in their hands. The garments associated with her care showed that she had noticed real needs and used her ability to meet them.
Couples can encourage that kind of useful faithfulness in one another. Value the quiet work your spouse does for someone who may never be able to return the favor. Help make reasonable room for service rather than treating every act of care as competition for your attention.
Serve within a healthy understanding of shared responsibilities. Generosity outside the home should not depend upon neglect inside it. Discuss the commitment and support a sustainable way to carry it out.
The Lord sees ordinary work done in love. A repair, a meal, a ride, or a carefully made item can bear witness to His kindness. You do not need to know how widely an act will be remembered before doing it faithfully. Notice a need together and consider the abilities available in your household. Some of the most meaningful service leaves no title beside a name, yet its absence would be deeply felt by the people who have received it.
