Notice the Person in Front of the Need

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor.

Proverbs 14:31 KJV

Helping someone can become impersonal when the problem occupies all our attention. We discuss the amount, the logistics, and the plan while forgetting that a person is receiving the help.

Treat people with dignity when your household offers assistance. Protect private details, avoid unnecessary questions, and do not require gratitude to be expressed in a particular way. Need does not make someone less worthy of respectful conversation.

Discuss generosity together so that both spouses understand the commitment. Seek trustworthy channels when a situation requires expertise or ongoing support. Wise stewardship and genuine compassion belong together.

The proverb places the matter before the person's Maker. Our conduct toward someone with fewer resources says something about our regard for the God who made them. Christ's grace should make us humble givers, aware that everything we possess has been received. Offer what you can responsibly give, and let kindness govern the manner as well as the amount. A person should leave an encounter with Christian generosity having received help without being made to feel that dignity was the price required for it.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb connects treatment of the poor with honor toward their Maker. Human need never removes the dignity given by God.
