Treat the Covenant as Something Weighty

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Matthew 19:6 KJV

A wedding promise reaches beyond the feeling present when it is spoken. It concerns a life of faithfulness through ordinary change, disappointment, responsibility, and joy. Jesus directs us to take that union seriously.

Do not use threats of leaving as a weapon in everyday disagreements. Words aimed at making a spouse feel disposable injure the security in which honest conversation should happen. Address the actual concern without treating the covenant as a bargaining tool.

Honor marriage through practical faithfulness: truthful conduct, sexual fidelity, responsible care, and willingness to address damaging habits. A serious promise deserves more than a serious expression on an anniversary.

This teaching must never be used to require someone to remain in immediate danger or conceal abuse. Seek protection, lawful help, and sound counsel where there is serious harm. God's regard for marriage does not excuse sin within it. In the responsibilities you can faithfully carry, let covenant commitment shape today's choices. A union treated as precious is tended through dependable conduct long after the public promises have been spoken.

Keep the passage in context

Jesus answers a question about divorce by returning to God's creation design for marriage. He emphasizes the seriousness of the union God has established.
