When One Income Changes
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.
Psalm 62:8 KJV
A lost job or reduced income changes more than a budget. It can disturb a person's confidence, alter routines, and raise fears that are difficult to explain. A spouse needs care as well as a plan.
Begin with the truth of the situation. Review immediate needs, available resources, and appropriate sources of assistance. Speak respectfully about the person whose work has changed. Employment is important, but it does not determine the whole value of a husband or wife.
Make room for honest feelings without requiring either person to predict how quickly the problem will be solved. Trust in God allows us to acknowledge uncertainty. It does not require a confident announcement about an outcome He has not promised.
Take practical steps together and accept help when it is available. Maintain ordinary kindness while decisions are being made. Psalm 62 directs us toward a refuge that remains when circumstances move. The Lord can be trusted during a search, a transition, or a long season of limited resources. Let shared dependence upon Him keep financial pressure from becoming a reason to turn against the person walking through it beside you.
Keep the passage in context
David calls God's people to trust Him at all times and pour out their hearts before Him. God is their refuge through changing circumstances.
