Bring a Long Burden to the Compassionate Lord

Bring a Long Burden to the Compassionate Lord: an original Matthew 9:20-22 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.”

Matthew 9:20-22 KJV

Twelve years is a long time to carry a physical burden. The brief account does not describe every difficult day, but the length matters. This woman came to Jesus with a history of suffering that the surrounding crowd could not fully see.

Read the passage carefully

Christ's response was personal. The healing was His act of power, not a technique contained in a garment. We should not turn the event into a promise that touching an object or repeating a particular action will secure healing today. Faith trusts the Lord Himself, whose wisdom governs outcomes we cannot command.

Long illness can make a person feel reduced to a problem that never quite leaves. If you are carrying such a burden, seek appropriate medical care and practical support, and remember that your value is greater than your ability to function without assistance. If you care for someone in that position, be patient with repeated needs. An illness that has become familiar to observers may remain exhausting to the person living through it.

Carry this truth into the day

The Saviour knows individuals within a crowd. His compassion does not depend upon whether their needs are new or whether other people have grown tired of hearing about them. Believers may ask Him for healing while resting their eternal hope in His finished work and promised resurrection. Offer that hope with tenderness, not as a reason to minimize today's pain. A visit, a thoughtful adjustment, or reliable help with an ordinary task can express care in a way a hurried explanation cannot. This woman's encounter reminds us that the Lord sees the whole person whose long struggle may be represented to others by only a few lines of description.

Why the setting matters

A woman who has suffered for twelve years approaches Jesus and is healed. He addresses her personally, recognizing her faith and giving assurance rather than leaving her as an unnoticed figure in the crowd.
