An old habit can speak as though it still owns the house. It knows the familiar hour, the familiar excuse, and the easiest entrance. Romans 6 reminds believers that salvation brings a new relationship to sin's authority.
A new standing calls for a new response
Paul has explained union with Christ in His death and resurrection. The command to reckon follows that truth. Believers are to regard themselves according to what God has done, alive to Him through Jesus Christ. This is not a technique of imagining away temptation. It is a response to the gospel's reality.
The next command is practical. Sin is not to reign in the mortal body. Temptation may remain present, but its demand is not the rightful command of our master. We belong to Christ. The old pattern cannot be excused simply because it has been familiar for a long time.
Refusal needs practical obedience
Stop providing the conditions that help the habit return. Bring secrecy into the light with trustworthy help. Change the routine that repeatedly leads toward the same disobedience. Learn the Scripture that addresses the issue and apply it before the choice becomes a crisis.
These actions depend on the Lord's grace and the Spirit's help. They are not a private project to prove that we no longer need Him. When you fail, confess honestly and return to obedience. Do not turn a failure into a reason to surrender the rest of the day to the same sin.
Offer the next choice to God
Your hands, speech, time, and attention can be used for what is right. Take one concrete step in that direction today. The habit may protest because it has been served for so long. Let God's word answer it. Christ has a rightful claim upon the believer, and obedience belongs to Him in the ordinary decisions where old habits once expected control.
Why the setting matters
Paul applies believers' union with Christ in His death and resurrection to daily conduct. They are to reckon themselves dead to sin and alive to God, resisting sin's reign through the new life they have in Christ.

Make the next choice agree with the truth

It tells us to live in agreement with what Christ has accomplished rather than yielding ourselves willingly to the old rule.
Bring that truth into one specific habit. Stop keeping easy access to what repeatedly draws you into sin. Change the conversation when it becomes dishonest. Seek help early instead of waiting until a hidden pattern has grown stronger. These steps are not a substitute for God's grace; grace gives reason and strength to obey. When you fail, confess the sin and return to the Lord. Do not turn a fall into an argument that continued surrender to sin is unavoidable.
