A few quiet minutes in Scripture

Faith Leaves Room for Tears

Faith Leaves Room for Tears: an original Genesis 23:1-2 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah. And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.”

Genesis 23:1-2 KJV

Abraham wept. The statement is plain, and it deserves to remain plain. The man who believed God, received His covenant, and saw the promised son born still experienced the sorrow of losing Sarah. Faith did not make the relationship less precious or the separation painless.

Read the passage carefully

Scripture gives no reason to judge those tears as a failure of trust. Grief belongs to the loss of someone loved. Abraham would continue with the practical responsibility of arranging burial, but the account first allows us to see his mourning. That order is kind. A person does not have to become efficient immediately in order to demonstrate spiritual maturity. Necessary work may come soon enough, and sorrow should be treated with patience while it does.

Christ's resurrection gives believers a sure hope beyond death. That hope is deeply different from despair, yet it does not require the absence of tears. We can trust the Saviour and still miss a familiar voice, a shared routine, or the presence of someone whose life was woven into our own. Friends should avoid easy judgments about the length or outward form of grief. Appropriate pastoral care, practical assistance, and professional support may all have a useful place as a person learns to carry the loss.

Carry this truth into the day

Be gentle with the grieving person near you. Offer specific help, listen without rushing toward a conclusion, and remember that an ordinary date can become a difficult reminder. If you are the one mourning, bring the sorrow honestly before the Lord and receive trustworthy support. Abraham's tears remind us that faith is lived by real people whose love and loss are real. The God who keeps His promises is not dishonored when His people weep within the hope He has given them.

Why the setting matters

Sarah dies, and Abraham mourns and weeps for her. His grief appears within the history of a man who trusted God's promises.
