Grace Can Stop a Person on the Wrong Road

Grace Can Stop a Person on the Wrong Road: an original Acts 9:1-9 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.”

Acts 9:1-9 KJV

Saul was not looking for a small improvement in his spiritual life. He believed he was right while moving determinedly toward a grievous wrong. The risen Lord interrupted him and made clear that his opposition to believers was opposition to Christ Himself.

Read the passage carefully

The encounter was unique to Saul's calling and later apostolic ministry. We should not require every conversion to include a dramatic light or an audible voice. The saving need is the same for all: sinners must receive the truth about Christ and trust His finished work. Grace can reach a person whose past conduct gives others little reason to expect such a change.

Do not assume sincerity makes a direction right. Saul was zealous, but his zeal needed correction by the Lord he had misunderstood. Bring your convictions under Scripture, remain willing to examine evidence, and listen when a faithful challenge exposes harm in your conduct. A strong commitment becomes dangerous when it makes repentance seem impossible because too much of your identity depends upon having always been correct.

Carry this truth into the day

Christ's mercy gives hope for people with serious histories. That hope does not remove the need for accountability, repair, and patient evidence of change. It does mean we should not place a person beyond the reach of the gospel in our own thinking. If the Lord has exposed your wrong road, turn toward Him rather than defending the distance already traveled. Confess truthfully, receive sound instruction, and begin the obedience now before you. Saul's journey reminds us that the Saviour can confront a confident sinner with truth and make the interruption the beginning of a life directed toward a very different purpose.

Why the setting matters

Saul travels toward Damascus to persecute believers when the risen Jesus confronts him. The encounter overturns his understanding and begins the transformation of a determined opponent of the church.
