Human affection often grows after someone becomes easier to love. We respond to kindness, shared interests, and the good a person brings into our lives. God's saving love reaches us at a point where we have no improved record to offer Him.
The cross demonstrates the love
Paul does not leave God's love as an undefined feeling. Christ died for us while we were sinners. The demonstration is historical and costly. Our rebellion was real, and the Saviour's sacrifice addressed it. Love did not require God to pretend that our sin was harmless.
The setting of Romans 5 includes peace with God and hope through Jesus Christ. Those blessings rest on His work. We should not read the verse as a general promise that every desire we have will be fulfilled. The great evidence of divine love is the giving of the Son for our reconciliation.
Grace reaches us before improvement
A sinner does not become worthy first and then qualify for Christ. We come because we need forgiveness and cannot provide our own righteousness. Repentance and faith turn us toward the Saviour rather than toward another attempt to make ourselves acceptable without Him.
Those who receive such love are then called to walk in newness of life. Grace is not permission to keep nourishing the sin Christ died to redeem us from. It gives a stronger motive for obedience than the anxious attempt to earn a place God has already given in His Son.
Let the cross settle the question of His love
There may be circumstances you cannot explain today. Do not use them as the only evidence in your judgment of God's heart. Look at what He has done in Christ. Then let received mercy affect the way you treat a difficult person. You cannot provide atonement for them, but you can show patient kindness as someone who was loved before he had anything worthy to offer.
Why the setting matters
Paul grounds assurance in God's demonstrated love through Christ's death for sinners. The following verses connect His death and resurrection life to reconciliation and salvation, not approval of continuing sin.

Receive love where God displayed it
We often look for evidence of love in present circumstances. An easy week feels reassuring, while a painful one can leave us questioning everything. Romans 5:8 directs us to the cross, where God's love was demonstrated toward us while we were still sinners. That event gives our assurance a firmer foundation than a changing schedule of comforts.
Return to that truth when shame tells you to keep away from Christ. He did not die for people who had already made themselves worthy. Come honestly as a sinner needing the Saviour. Then let His love shape how you treat difficult people. Kindness need not wait until every inconvenience is removed. Appropriate boundaries may still be necessary, but a heart that has received such mercy has reason to resist contempt and personal revenge.
