The Name of Jesus Announces His Mission
The Name of Jesus Announces His Mission: an original Matthew 1:21-23 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
Matthew 1:21-23 KJV
The announcement reaches deeper than the problems most people would first want removed. Jesus came to save His people from their sins. The need is spiritual and eternal, even though its effects reach every part of ordinary life.
Read the passage carefully
We often approach God first with a pressing circumstance. The bill, illness, strained relationship, or uncertain job deserves honest concern. Yet the gospel does not present Jesus as someone whose main purpose is to secure our preferred arrangement. He is the incarnate Son who would die for sinners and rise again. Forgiveness and reconciliation with God are gifts no improvement in circumstances can replace.
Keep that mission clear when you speak about faith. Do not promise that trusting Christ will guarantee prosperity, remove every illness, or prevent future grief. Tell the good news that His finished work is sufficient and salvation is received by grace through faith. A person can belong to Him while still needing medical care, employment, practical assistance, or patient support through sorrow. Those needs should move the church toward compassionate service rather than careless explanations.
Carry this truth into the day
The name Emmanuel also gives comfort. God has not remained distant from the world He came to redeem. In Christ, He has entered human history and accomplished what sinners could never accomplish for themselves. Bring your daily concerns to Him with confidence, while keeping the deepest gift in view. An answered request is a mercy, but the Saviour Himself is greater than the particular answer you seek. The announcement of His name invites us to understand why He came and to build our hope upon His saving work, which remains sufficient even when the circumstances of the day still require endurance.
Why the setting matters
The angel identifies Jesus as the One who will save His people from their sins. Matthew connects His birth with the prophecy of Emmanuel, affirming God's presence in the coming of Christ.
