The Dream and the Resistance
Scripture Reading – Genesis 37:5-8
And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

Scripture Review
Joseph dreamed that the brothers’ sheaves stood round about and bowed to his sheaf. His brothers understood the meaning immediately: they heard rule and dominion. Their response was not prayer or patient observation. They hated him yet the more. The dream described a future God would bring to pass, but it did not tell Joseph how long the road would be or how low it would go first.
I am struck by the difference between receiving a word and possessing its fulfillment. Joseph could repeat the dream in one morning, but he could not force it into being. A promise from God is not permission for pride or self-promotion. It is a reason to trust and wait. The brothers thought that resisting Joseph would cancel the dream. Their resistance would actually become part of the road by which God fulfilled it.
The brothers meant to reject every suggestion that Joseph would ever rule over them. Hatred turned the message into a personal threat.
God was revealing the end before Joseph entered the painful middle. The dream would stand because its fulfillment depended upon God, not Joseph’s power.
What this asks of me
I must not try to manufacture what God has promised or use spiritual language to demand recognition. I can obey what is clear today and leave tomorrow with Him. I also need to remember that opposing another person out of envy may place me in conflict with work God is doing beyond my sight.

- Am I trying to force an outcome that belongs in God’s hands?
- Does another person’s calling feel like a threat to my worth?
