Let Us See What Will Become

Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

Scripture Review
The brothers see Joseph afar off, and before he comes near, they conspire to kill him. Distance gave hatred room to plan. They called him “this dreamer,” proposed murder, prepared a lie, and said, “we shall see what will become of his dreams.” That sentence places their purpose directly against what God had revealed. They imagined that ending Joseph’s life would end God’s Word.
Sin often builds a complete story before the victim reaches the room. Joseph has not spoken in these verses. The brothers have already judged him, sentenced him, and designed the cover-up. Their plan shows how envy grows when it is fed instead of confessed. First they could not speak peaceably. Then they hated his dreams. Now they are ready to shed blood. A tolerated heart sin never promises to remain small.
The brothers meant to silence Joseph permanently, bury the evidence, and prove that his dreams had no authority over their future.
God was allowing their rebellion to expose itself while guarding a purpose they could oppose but could not overturn.
What this asks of me
I need to deal with envy and bitterness while they are still matters of the heart. Rehearsing another person’s faults from a distance can turn suspicion into a verdict. God’s will does not need my sinful help, and human resistance cannot make His Word fail. I should fear the first steps toward hatred, not just its final act.
