A Rescue That Stopped Halfway

And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;

Scripture Review
Reuben hears the murder plan and delivers Joseph out of their hands, saying they should not kill him. He intends to return and restore Joseph to his father. That is better than the others’ violence, but his courage remains hidden inside a compromise. Joseph is stripped of his coat and cast into an empty pit. Reuben has delayed the evil, but he has not openly led his brothers to do right.
Half-courage can keep a conscience comfortable while leaving another person in danger. It is like seeing smoke, moving the matches, and never sounding the alarm. Reuben had influence as the eldest, yet he tried to manage the situation quietly. Scripture later shows that his secret plan did not rescue Joseph. Good intentions are not the same as faithful action when truth requires me to stand.
The brothers meant humiliation and death. Reuben meant to prevent murder and recover Joseph later, but he tried to do it without confronting the group fully.
God was preserving Joseph’s life even through an incomplete human intervention. The empty pit would not become Joseph’s grave.
What this asks of me
There are moments when quiet concern is not enough. If I have the responsibility and opportunity to speak, I should not leave righteousness dependent on a secret plan. God can mercifully use imperfect efforts, but that does not excuse my fear. I need courage that acts in the open and trusts the Lord with the consequences.
