Scripture Review

The garment is laid up until Potiphar comes home, and the accusation is repeated. This time the language places responsibility even more directly on him: “The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us.” Lies often adjust themselves for the audience. The household heard one version; the husband hears a version designed to touch his pride and anger.

Joseph is absent from the conversation. That is one of the hardest experiences in any accusation. Other people explain your actions in a room where you cannot answer. Scripture gives the reader the truth before giving the lie, so I never have to wonder about Joseph’s guilt. God knows the order of events even when human judgment reverses it. He saw the refusal, the escape, the garment, and every false word.

What was meant here?

Potiphar’s wife meant to make her husband feel personally betrayed and to use his authority against the servant who would not consent to her sin.

What was God meaning?

God meant to keep a true record of Joseph’s faithfulness. Human authority could misjudge him, but heaven’s verdict did not change.

What this asks of me

I should listen carefully before anger makes a decision for me. A confident accusation can still be false. If I am the one misrepresented, I must remember that God was in the room before the story was retold. My peace cannot depend entirely on receiving an immediate public correction.

Consider

  1. Do I become easier to manipulate when an accusation touches my pride?
  2. Where do I need to rest in God’s complete knowledge while pursuing truth patiently?
