The Garment Becomes Evidence

And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

Scripture Review
Potiphar’s wife calls the men of the house and builds a false accusation around the garment Joseph left. She identifies him as “an Hebrew” and turns Potiphar’s decision to bring Joseph into the house against her husband: “he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us.” A private temptation becomes a public story, and prejudice helps the lie find an audience.
The garment proves only that Joseph was present, not that her accusation is true. Evidence must be interpreted honestly. The same object that testifies to Joseph’s flight is made to testify against him. This is painful because doing right did not control what others said afterward. Joseph could govern his conduct; he could not govern her account of it. Integrity is obedience before God, not the ability to guarantee that everyone believes me.
Potiphar’s wife meant to protect herself, punish Joseph’s refusal, and recruit the household by turning his nationality and garment into a convincing accusation.
God meant to preserve the truth of Joseph’s innocence even when human witnesses accepted a false explanation of the evidence.
What this asks of me
I must never use prejudice, selective evidence, or a crowd to strengthen a weak accusation. When I am falsely represented, I should tell the truth through the proper means and entrust my name to God. A damaged reputation hurts, but surrendering integrity to defend it would cost more.

- Have I accepted a story because it appealed to prejudice rather than because the evidence proved it?
- Can I remain truthful when I cannot control what other people believe about me?
