True Men or Spies

And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.

We are all one man’s sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.

And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

Scripture Review
The brothers insist they are true men, sons of one man, with a younger brother at home and one brother who “is not.” Joseph hears them speak of his disappearance as settled history. He presses the accusation and declares that their claim will be tested. The men who once constructed a false story must now prove that their present words are true.
I wonder how often they had repeated “one is not” until the phrase felt easier than the truth. Guilt can turn a person into the editor of his own history. Joseph does not correct them yet. He lets their own account bring Benjamin and the missing brother into the room. What they say casually is not casual to the man standing before them.
The brothers meant to persuade Egypt’s governor that they were honest travelers and no threat to the land.
God meant to place their claim of truthfulness under examination and bring the hidden history of Joseph into their present crisis.
What this asks of me
Calling myself truthful is not the same as walking in truth. I should listen for the phrases I use to avoid naming what really happened. Repentance does not just say that a relationship ended or a person disappeared. It tells the truth about my part and accepts that trust may need to be proved.
