Three Days to Sit With the Truth
Scripture Reading – Genesis 42:15-17
Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.

Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.

Scripture Review
Joseph declares that one brother will remain while the others bring Benjamin, then puts all of them into ward for three days. Scripture does not explain every purpose behind each detail, so I should avoid pretending I can read Joseph’s mind. What is plain is that the brothers who confined Joseph now experience confinement themselves and have time in which the past can speak.
Three days do not repay thirteen years, and Joseph is not authorized to become God’s avenger. The test concerns whether their account is true and whether Benjamin can be brought. Sometimes stillness is part of exposure. Busy people can outrun a memory for years, but a locked room removes the next task and leaves the conscience with room to talk.
Joseph meant to test the brothers’ claim and hold them where they could not simply buy food and disappear back into Canaan.
God meant to continue bringing buried guilt into the light and require the family to face its fear concerning another favored son.
What this asks of me
I do not need to assign a spiritual meaning to every delay, but I should not waste enforced stillness. When plans stop, I can ask the Lord what truth I have avoided. If I am responsible for testing another person’s trustworthiness, the process should seek truth and restoration, never personal pleasure in control.

- What truth becomes harder to avoid when my usual activity stops?
- If I must test trust, is my goal restoration or the satisfaction of having power?
