This Do, and Live; for I Fear God

And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:

Scripture Review
On the third day Joseph changes the arrangement. Because he fears God, one brother will remain bound while the others carry corn home and return with Benjamin. Joseph’s fear of God places a limit on his power. He has authority to keep them all, yet he sends food to their starving households and provides a path by which their words can be proved.
The statement “I fear God” must be more than a religious label. It shapes what Joseph does with people who once harmed him. He does not let their guilt make him careless about their children’s hunger. The fear of God restrains revenge, requires justice, and leaves room for mercy. Power reveals whether my heart answers to someone higher than itself.
Joseph meant to hold one brother as security and require the others to return with Benjamin before receiving full trust.
God meant to use a ruler who feared Him, preserving the brothers’ households while moving the test toward Benjamin and deeper repentance.
What this asks of me
If I say I fear God, that confession should change how I use authority when no one can overrule me. I should seek truth without cruelty, set wise limits without hatred, and remember innocent needs beyond the person who wronged me. The fear of God keeps power from becoming permission.
