I Will Be Surety for Him
Scripture Reading – Genesis 43:8-10
And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.

I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:

For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.

Scripture Review
Judah steps forward and offers to be surety for Benjamin. He will bear the blame forever if he does not bring the young man back. This is the brother who once asked what profit could be gained by selling Joseph. Now he accepts personal responsibility for the safety of another favored son. The change is not complete in words alone, but the words matter because they commit Judah to act.
Reuben had offered the lives of his sons. Judah offers himself. That is a wiser and more righteous pledge. Surety means he places his own standing behind Benjamin’s return. God has been working in the man from Genesis 38. Repentance is beginning to alter the direction of his courage. Judah is turning away from protecting himself and toward carrying responsibility for someone else.
Judah meant to persuade Jacob by placing his own name, responsibility, and lasting blame behind Benjamin’s safe return.
God meant to continue remaking Judah into the brother who would soon offer himself in Benjamin’s place and protect his father from grief.
What this asks of me
Responsibility becomes real when I stop promising what others will pay and place myself behind my word. I should not volunteer another person’s sacrifice to prove my sincerity. Where I have once failed a relationship, changed words must become changed conduct. Surety is not a speech; it is a willingness to bear the cost.

- Does my promise place responsibility on me or shift the risk to someone else?
- What changed action should now follow the repentance I have expressed?
