If I Be Bereaved, I Am Bereaved
Scripture Reading – Genesis 43:11-14
And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:

Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:

And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

Scripture Review
Jacob finally tells the sons to take the best fruits of the land, double money, the money returned in their sacks, and Benjamin. He asks that God Almighty give them mercy before the man. Then he says, “If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” These are not carefree words. They are the surrender of a father who can no longer control every risk.
Jacob prepares responsibly and prays dependently. He does not choose between gifts, repayment, and the mercy of God. The doubled money demonstrates honesty; the gifts show respect; the prayer acknowledges that no preparation can govern the Egyptian ruler’s heart. Faith is not refusing to pack the bags. It is packing them carefully and admitting that the outcome belongs to God Almighty.
Jacob meant to answer every possible charge, gain favor through an honorable gift, and give his sons the best chance of returning safely.
God meant to loosen Jacob’s fearful grip and bring the whole family one step nearer to mercy, provision, and reunion.
What this asks of me
There are moments when love must release what fear wants to hold. Surrender is not carelessness. I can prepare, repay what may be owed, seek peace, pray, and then place the people I love in God’s hands. Control cannot guarantee their safety; God’s mercy can be trusted when I cannot see the road.

- Have I combined responsible preparation with honest dependence upon the Lord?
