Unstable as Water

Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:

Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.

Scripture Review
Jacob calls his sons together to tell what shall befall them. He begins with Reuben, the firstborn, his might, and the beginning of his strength. Reuben possessed natural dignity and the firstborn’s excellence, but Jacob immediately says, “Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel.” His sin with Bilhah had consequences that position could not erase.
Genesis 37 already showed Reuben’s instability. He wanted to rescue Joseph, yet his half-courage left the brother in a pit while he stepped away. Natural rank, strong intentions, and occasional concern cannot substitute for a governed character. Gifts may open a place of influence, but instability can make that influence unsafe. Sin forgiven by God may still leave earthly consequences that teach the next generation sobriety.
Reuben had meant to live from the privilege of the firstborn while repeatedly failing to govern desire and carry responsibility through to completion.
God meant to judge instability truthfully, remove the assumed preeminence of birth, and teach Israel that character matters more than natural rank.
What this asks of me
I should not rest on title, seniority, ability, or a good intention that I never carry through. Consistency is built in private decisions before it is needed in a crisis. If past sin has consequences, I can receive the warning humbly and become faithful in the responsibilities still before me.
