Part Five: The Blessing and the Bones · Week 16

Day 111 Genesis 49:5-7

Instruments of Cruelty

Scripture Reading – Genesis 49:5-7

Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

Genesis 49:5 KJV

O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.

Genesis 49:6 KJV

Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

Genesis 49:7 KJV

Scripture Review

Jacob joins Simeon and Levi in his words because the brothers had joined in violence at Shechem. He calls their weapons instruments of cruelty, separates his honor from their secret counsel, and condemns the anger that slew men and the self-will that disabled cattle. Their anger was fierce and their wrath cruel; they would be divided and scattered in Israel.

Jacob does not call cruelty righteousness because it grew from family outrage. Anger can begin with a real wrong and still become sinful in method, measure, and motive. Simeon and Levi had used covenant language deceitfully and answered one man’s sin with violence against a city. Zeal is not holy just because it speaks loudly for something valuable. God judges what zeal does.

What was meant here?

Simeon and Levi meant to answer Dinah’s defilement through deception, uncontrolled vengeance, and the violent assertion of family honor.

What was God meaning?

God meant to expose cruelty beneath the name of zeal and scatter the brothers whose anger could not safely govern a tribe.

What this asks of me

I need to examine both the cause and the conduct of my anger. A true grievance does not sanctify deceit, cruelty, or self-will. Before calling my reaction courageous, I should ask whether it reflects God’s holiness, truth, restraint, and concern for people made in His image.

Consider

  1. Have I used a real wrong to excuse a sinful manner of responding?
  2. Would God describe my present zeal as holy courage or as self-willed anger?
