Obedience with the Right Authority

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Acts 5:29 KJV

This verse is not permission to call every rule you dislike a spiritual conflict. The apostles were commanded to stop doing what the Lord had expressly commissioned them to do. Their answer concerned a clear contradiction between God's authority and a human order.

Most daily instructions about homework, safety, chores, and courtesy do not belong in that category. Scripture teaches respect and appropriate obedience. A personal preference does not become God's command simply because you feel strongly about it.

When a real conflict arises, examine the Bible carefully and seek help from a trustworthy mature believer. Do not use a verse as cover for pride or an excuse to refuse ordinary responsibility. If someone asks you to lie, conceal abuse, or join wrongdoing, you should seek safe help and remain faithful to what God has said.

Courage and humility belong together. The apostles' obedience was serious and costly; it was not a performance of independence. Let the Lord's actual Word govern your choices, including the way you speak to those in authority. A respectful manner can carry a firm refusal when obedience to God truly requires it.

Keep the passage in context

The apostles refuse an order that directly forbids their God-given witness to Christ. Their obedience to God takes precedence over a human command that contradicts Him.
