Notice Someone You Can Encourage

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Hebrews 10:24 KJV

Encouragement often begins before you say anything. You have to notice the person who is usually overlooked, the task that needs another pair of hands, or the friend who has become unusually quiet.

Hebrews asks believers to consider one another. That requires attention beyond your own experience of a meeting or activity. A local church is not a place where every person simply evaluates whether the program suited them. It is a family of believers learning to care and serve together.

Look for a specific way to encourage what is good. Thank someone for patient service. Invite a lonely person into an appropriate group activity. Help complete a practical task without waiting for an announcement. Honest, particular encouragement is often more useful than a large compliment with no clear meaning.

Keep the purpose in view. We are helping one another toward love and obedience to Christ, not building a circle where everyone approves of everything. Sometimes encouragement strengthens a good beginning; sometimes it helps someone begin again after failure. Small acts of thoughtful care can make faithfulness easier for another person today.

Keep the passage in context

Believers are called to consider one another and encourage love and good works. The surrounding passage connects this care with gathering together and holding fast to hope in Christ.
