Loved before We Were Impressive

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 KJV

A reputation can become exhausting when you believe love depends on keeping it polished. You hide weakness, edit the story, and worry that being fully known would mean being rejected. The gospel begins with a truth pride would rather avoid: we are sinners whom God already knows.

Christ died for us in that condition. His love was not a response to an impressive record we finally produced. The cross reveals both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God's mercy. Jesus rose again, and salvation is received through faith in Him.

Grace is no excuse to protect the wrong. It gives us reason to stop hiding and turn toward the Saviour honestly. Those who belong to Him should learn to walk in the light, confessing sin and receiving His instruction.

You do not need to invent a more acceptable past before coming to Christ. You need the Saviour who came for sinners. Let that truth also make you less eager to despise another person's need. The grace you receive leaves little room for acting as though you were the one person who never required mercy.

Keep the passage in context

Paul identifies Christ's death for sinners as the demonstration of God's love. Divine love acted while we were undeserving rather than waiting for us to earn it.
